NBN – What is it all about? (Part 3)
Why do we want higher speeds and more bandwidth?
Well, there are lots of people that will tell you about music and movie downloads, IP Telephone Calls like using Skype, online gaming etc..but these are not really what I call essential services.
They will generate new business opportunities and those that enjoy these types of services will certainly be happy but why do other businesses need the NBN?
The first reason is just simply to have access to the Internet.
There are so many homes and businesses that cannot get suitable access to the Internet right now. Think about how you use the Internet to do banking, send emails, contact your clients, pay bills, purchase equipment, research, buy real estate, check what your competition is doing…..etc etc
Imagine you didn’t have it anymore or it was just so slow it took forever to send an email.
Business solutions and productivity, many businesses are moving towards “Cloud Computing” others have centralised applications in offices with 10, 20 and even 200 people. The basic DSL services just do not work, they need much higher bandwidth and they need it to be reliable. It is ok to say DSL works at 12mb but it just doesn’t at every location or time of day.
Telemedicine, many people in the cities take for granted the access we have to specialist medical teams but those in regional areas they often have to travel long distances for these services. Imagine being able to go to the local GP’s office in Alice Springs and have access to a Collins Street specialist !
Training & Development, imagine you are part of a large Real Estate business and you have 300 offices Australia wide and you want to implement a new system. Now imagine you have everyone at one time involved in an interactive training session, all possible with reliable ubiquitous broadband.
Certainty of Service, what if you had implemented a national accounting system that required real time access to the central system and you needed one of your offices to relocate.
Now imagine you ordered the new broadband service and your provider informs you it will not be available for 12 months? This actually happens!
So the NBN is not just about higher speeds, its also about basic services.
In my opinion we need the NBN and I haven’t even spoken about the huge new potential for new businesses, for decentralisation & working from home opportunities.
Next blog will be a short introduction to “Cloud Computing”, what is that anyway!
